DRIEPEER

Volume 17 · 103 words · 1810 Edition

or Dnieper, a river of Russia, which rises in the forest of Volkoniski, near the source of the Volga, about 100 miles from Smolensko. It passes by Smolensko and Mobilef, separates the Ukraine from Poland, flows by Kiof, and falls into the Black Sea between Otsakof and Kinburn. By the acquisition of the province of Mobilef, its whole course is now included within the Russian territories. It begins to be navigable at a little distance above Smolensko, though... in some seasons of the year it is so shallow near the town, that the goods must be transported upon rafts and small flat-bottomed boats.
