a town of Ireland, in the county of Down. It is a very ancient town, and the seat of a bishopric. The see was founded by St Colman in the 6th century. It was refounded by King James I who, by his charters (now preserved in the Rolls office) granted it very great and uncommon privileges. Among other marks of royal favour, he distinguishes the bishops of this see by the style of "A.B. by Divine Providence bishop of Dromore;" whereas all other bishops bishops in Ireland, except those of Meath and Kildare, are styled, "by Divine Permission." This see, although the least in its extent, is so complete and perfect in its endowment and jurisdiction, that it need not envy the greatest and most opulent.
