Volume 20 · 85 words · 1810 Edition

a town in Kent, with a market on Fridays, but no fair. It is seated on the river Thames, and of great note for its fine docks and yards, where men of war are built; as also for its vast magazines of great guns, mortars, bombs, cannon-balls, powder, and other warlike stores. It has likewise an academy, where the mathematics are taught, and young officers instructed in the military art. It is nine miles east of London. E. Long. o. 10. N. Lat. 51. 30.
