or ADJUNCTS, in the Royal Academy of Sciences at Paris, denoted a class of members, attached to the pursuit of particular sciences. The class of Adjuncts was created in 1716, in lieu of the Elevers: they were twelve in number; two for geometry, two for mechanics, two for astronomy, two for anatomy, two for chemistry, and two for botany. The Elevers not taken into this establishment were admitted on the footing of supernumerary Adjuncts.
