a very pleasant town of the kingdom of Granada, in Spain, situated in the midst of some craggy mountains, about 25 miles S.W. of Granada, on the banks of the Rio Frio, in W. Long. 3° 26'. N. Lat. 36° 59', and having the finest warm baths in all Spain. It was taken from the Moors in 1481. The inhabitants, though surprised, and the town without a garrison, made a gallant defense; but being at length forced to submit, the place was abandoned to the pillage of the Christian soldiers, who not satisfied with an immense quantity of gold and jewels, made slaves of upwards of 3000 of the inhabitants.
