(Tacitus): a people of Germany situated between the Wefer and the Ems, and eastward reaching beyond the Wefer, as far as the Cherufci, on which side they raised a rampart (Tacitus); to the south, having the Tubantes on the Ems, and on the Wefer where it bends to the forest Bacemis; to the west, the Ems and the confines of the Bructeri; and to the north, the territory of the Angivarii lay between the Chamavi and Anfbarii. Ptolemy places them between the Cauchi and Suevi or Catti. Supposed now to contain a part of the county of Schaumburg, the half of the bishopric or principality of Minden to the south, the greatest part of the bishopric of Osnaburg, the north part of the country of Tucenburg, and a part of the county of Ravenburg. A trace of the name of the people still remains in the appellation Energia, a small town in the county of Ravenburg.
