a forest in France, formerly of vast extent; but the trees are in many places grubbed up, and where they stood are built cities, towns, and abbeys. At present it extends from Thionville, near the country of Lorraine, to Doncherry and Sedan, on the confines of Champagne. The roads are so narrow in some places, that two wagons cannot pass each other; and therefore the wagons are obliged to provide themselves with bells or horns to give one another notice to stop in time.
