formerly a province of Guienne in France, which with Gafcony now forms the department of Gers, is 55 miles in length, and 40 in breadth; bounded on the west by the river Garonne, on the south by Bigorre and Bearn, on the west by Gafcony, and on the north by Condomois and Agenois: Auch is the capital town. It is fertile in corn and wine, and carries on a considerable trade in brandy, wool, and bonchretin pears, which are excellent.
