BAMOTH-BAAL

Volume 3 · 106 words · 1815 Edition

in Ancient Geography, one of the towns of the tribe of Reuben, which seems also to have had a temple of Baal on an eminence; lying eastwards, and not far from the river Arnon, and the territory of Moab. Jerome calls it Bamoth, a city of the Amorites, beyond Jordan, in the possession of the sons of Reuben. Whether the same with that mentioned Numb. xxi. is doubtful, from the disagreement of interpreters; and yet we may admit it to be the place of encampment of the Israelites, and of Balaam's first station, or where he had the first view of the rear of the people.
