or BASS, a town of the French Netherlands, in the county of Flanders, on the confines of Artois, remarkable on account of the many sieges it has sustained; but its fortifications are now demolished. It is seated on a canal which runs as far as Deule. E. Long. 3. o. N. Lat. 50. 53.

Basse Terre, part of the island of St Christopher's, one of the Caribbee islands, formerly occupied by the French, but ceded to Great Britain by the treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
