BRAMPOUR

Volume 4 · 150 words · 1815 Edition

or BRAMPORE, a city of Asia, in the dominion of the Great Mogul, and capital of Candahar. It formerly stood on as much ground as London; but it is now greatly decayed, and chiefly inhabited by Banians. The streets are numerous but narrow, with low thatched houses made of earth, though a few are covered with varnished tiles. In rainy weather many of the streets are overflowed. In the market place is the statue of an elephant in red stone, as big as the life. On the other side of the river they have built a new town, which is in a better situation. A great trade is carried on in this town, and throughout all the province, where there is made a prodigious quantity of cotton-cloths, as cotton is in greater plenty here than in any other place of the empire. E. Long. 77° 25'. N. Lat. 21° 10'.
