a sea port town of Sussex in England. It is a pretty large and populous town, though ill built, and has a pretty good harbour. W. Long. 0° 10' N. Lat. 50° 50'. It was at this place King Charles II. embarked for France in 1651, after the battle of Worcester. It has lately been considerably extended and embellished, in consequence of its having become a place of great resort for sea-bathing.
