BUCHOREST, a pretty large town of Turkey in Europe, seated in the middle of Walachia, and the ordinary residence of a hospodar. The houses are mean and very ill built, except a few that belong to the principal persons. In 1716, a party of Germans sent from Transylvania entered this town, and took the prince prisoner with all his court, and carried them off. This expedition was the more easily performed, as several lords of the country had a secret intelligence with the governor of Transylvania. This prince had no other way to regain his liberty, but by giving up that part of Walachia, which lies between the river Aluth and Transylvania, to the emperor of Germany, by the peace concluded at Passarowitz in 1718. The Germans entered again to the capital of his dominions, and levied excessive contributions. But affairs took another turn after the fatal battle of Crostka in 1737; for the emperor was obliged to restore this part of Walachia to the hospodar, in virtue of the treaty of Belgrade. E.
