or the League of the House of God, is one of those that compose the republic of the Grisons, and the most powerful and extensive of them all. It contains the bishopric of Coire, the great valley of Engadine, and that of Bragil or Pregal. Of the 11 great or 21 small communities, there are but two that speak the German language; that of the rest is called the Rhetic, and is a dialect of the Italian. The Protestant religion is most prevalent in this league, which has been allied to the Swiss cantons ever since the year 1498. Coire is the capital town.
