CALYBITES

Volume 5 · 51 words · 1815 Edition

the inhabitants of a cottage, an appellation given to divers saints on account of their long residence in some hut by way of mortification.

The word is formed from καλύπτω, tigo, I cover; whence καλύπτον, a little cot. The Cumbish church commemorates St John the Calybite on the 15th of December.
