Volume 5 · 68 words · 1815 Edition

or CAPTAIN GALLEY, the chief or principal galley of a state, not dignified with the title of a kingdom. The capitana was anciently the denomination of the chief galley of France, which the commander went on board of. But since the suppression of the office of captain general of the galleys in 1669, they have no capitana, but the first galley is called reale, and the second parone.
