Volume 5 · 66 words · 1815 Edition

a powder of a very beautiful red colour bordering upon purple; and used by painters in miniature, though rarely, on account of its great price. The manner of preparing it is kept a secret by the colour-makers; neither do any of these receipts which have for a long time been published concerning the preparation of this and other colours at all answer the purpose. See COLOUR-making.
