in America, one of the largest bays in the known world. Its entrance is between Cape Charles and Cape Henry in Virginia, 12 miles wide; and it extends 270 miles to the northward, dividing Virginia and Maryland. Through this extent it is from 7 to 18 miles broad, and generally about 9 fathoms deep; affording many commodious harbours, and a safe and easy navigation. It receives the waters of the Susquehannah, Potomak, Rappahannock, York, and James rivers, which are all large and navigable.
