CITHÆRON, in Ancient Geography, a mountain and forest of Boeotia, celebrated both in fable and song. To the west it ran obliquely, a little above the Sinus Crithæus, taking its rise contiguous to the mountains of Megara and Attica; then levelled into plains, it terminates at Thebes, famous for the fate of Pentheus and Actæon; the former torn by the Bacchæ, the latter by his dogs; as also for the orgia, or revels of Bacchus.
