CLEMENTINE

Volume 6 · 61 words · 1815 Edition

a term used among the Augustins, who apply it to a person who, after having been nine years a superior, ceases to be so, and becomes a private monk, under the command of a superior. The word has its rise hence, that Pope Clement, by a bull, prohibited any superior among the Augustins from continuing above nine years in his office.
