There is not a phenomenon in nature by which the attention of philosophers has been more engaged, or which has puzzled them more to account for, than this very common operation. To explain it, theories have been invented, the most opposite and contradictory to one another that can be imagined; and, till very lately, the state of science did not afford data sufficient to explain it in a rational manner.
