Volume 6 · 55 words · 1815 Edition

in Anatomy, an assemblage of several bones which cover and enclose the brain and cerebrum, popularly called the skull. See ANATOMY Index.

The word comes from the Greek σκευος, of σκευος, galae, "helmet;" because it serves to defend the brain like a head-piece. Pezron, again, derives σκευος from the Celtic creon, because of its roundness.
