in Grammar, is a figure whereby two different letters are either contracted into one long letter or a diphthong. Such, e.g., is ἀριστος for ἀριστος; ἀνάθηκα for ἀνάθηκα, &c. εὐχεῖς for εὐχεῖς, &c. where ι and α are contracted into ει; and ι and ο into ω; and ει and ο into η.
