in the navy, are small men of war made use of to and fro in the Channel, and elsewhere, to secure our merchant ships and vessels from the enemy's small frigates and privateers. They are generally such as fail well, and are commonly well manned; and indeed the safety of the trade in the Channel, and up and down the foundings, and other places, absolutely requires the constant keeping out such ships at sea.
