Eurydice, in fabulous history, the wife of Orpheus, who, flying from Aristaeus that endeavoured to ravish her, was slain by a serpent. Her husband went down to the shades, and by the force of his music persuaded Pluto and Proserpine to give him leave to carry back his wife; which they granted, provided he did not look on her till he came to the light: but he breaking the condition, was forced to leave her behind him. See Orpheus.
