the act of diminishing or lessening the bulk or substance of a thing, especially of the human body. Fevers, agues, long abstinences, &c., occasion great extenuations or emaciations.

EXTENATION, is also a figure in rhetoric, opposite to the hyperbole. The Greeks call it ἀλογίας.
