FAVISSÆ, in antiquity, were, according to Festus and Gellius, cisterns to keep water in: but the favissæ in the Capitol at Rome were subterranean cellars, where the old statues, broken vessels, and other things used in the temple, were laid up. They were much the same with the archives and treasury of modern churches.
