a bay of considerable extent in North America, opening between the islands of Penobscot bay, in the county of Lincoln, and Cape Sable, the south-west point of Nova Scotia. It reaches about 200 miles in a north-east direction, and forms a very narrow isthmus with Verte bay, which reaches into the land in a south-west direction from the straits of Northumberland. It is 12 leagues from St John's in New Brunswick, to the Gut of Annapolis in Nova Scotia, where the tides are remarkably rapid, and rise to the height of 30 feet. The tides in this bay are so rapid, that it is said, they will overtake animals feeding on the shore.
