FURETIERE

Volume 9 · 134 words · 1815 Edition

ANTONY, an ingenious and learned Frenchman, was born at Paris in 1620; and after a liberal education became eminent in the civil and canon law. He was first an advocate in the parliament; and afterwards taking orders, was presented with the abbey of Chalivoy, and the priory of Chunes. Many works of literature recommended him to the public; but what he is chiefly known by and valued for is, his Universal Dictionary of the French Tongue, in which he explains the terms of art in all sciences. He had not, however, the pleasure of seeing this useful work published before his death; which happened in 1688. He was a member of the French academy; and the disputes and quarrels which he had with certain members of it made a great noise in the world.
