CORNELIUS, an ancient Roman poet, born at Forum Julium, now called Fréjus in France. He was a particular favourite with Augustus Caesar, who made him governor of Egypt: but his mal-administration there occasioned his banishment, and the loss of his estate; for grief of which he put an end to his own life. He wrote four books of love elegies; and Virgil has complimented him in many places.
