GATESHEAD

Volume 9 · 108 words · 1815 Edition

in the county of Durham, is as it were the suburbs of Newcastle, though it lies in another county, being divided by the river Tyne; over which there is a fine stone bridge, with an iron gate in the middle, having the arms of Durham on one side, and those of Newcastle on the other, which is the boundary between the bishopric and Northumberland. The church is a fine building, with a very high tower, which is seen at a great distance; and in the church-yard are several ancient monuments. Few traces of its ancient monastery remain, except a stone gateway. The population in 1801 amounted to 8597.
