a village in the county of Surrey, 19 miles south from London. It lies under the side of a hill going to Reygate; and is supposed to have been known to the Romans, by reason of their coins and other antiquities that have been found here. It is a borough by prescription; and has sent members to parliament ever since the 29th of Henry VI. It was formerly a large town; but is now a mean village, with a small church, and without either fair or market. It sends two members to parliament. The population in 1851 amounted to 112.
