a Hebrew word occurring frequently in the Psalms, and generally tranflated wine preffes. The conjectures of interpreters are various concerning this word. Some think it signifies a fort of musical instrument; others, that the psalms with this title were fang after the vintage; laftly, others, that the hymns of this kind were invented in the city of Gath. Calmet is rather of opinion, that it was given to the clas of young women or longtrefles of Gath to be fang by them, Pfal. viii. 1. lxxxi. 1. lxxxiv. 1. Dr Hammond thinks that the psalms with this title were all fet to the fame tune, and made on Goliath the Gittite.
