the act of gathering or picking up the ears of corn left behind after the field has been reaped and the crop carried home. By the customs of some countries, particularly those of Melun and Estampes, all farmers and others are forbid, either by themselves or servants, to put any cattle into the fields, or prevent the gleaning in any manner whatever for the space of 24 hours after the carrying off the corn, under the penalty of confiscation.
