a strong town of Germany, in Silesia, and capital of a duchy of the same name. It is not very large, but is well fortified on the side of Poland. It has a handsome castle, with a tower, in which several counsellors were condemned by Duke John, in 1498, to perish with hunger. Besides the Papists, there are a great number of Protestants and Jews. It was taken by assault, by the king of Prussia, in 1741, and the garrison made prisoners. After the peace in 1742, the king of Prussia settled the supreme court of justice here, it being, next to Breslaw, the most populous place in Silesia. It is seated on the river Oder, in E. GLOGAW the LESS, a town of Silesia, in the duchy of Oppeln, now in the possession of the king of Prussia. It is 19 miles south of Oppeln, and 45 northwest of Breslaw. E. Long. 16. 15. N. Lat. 51. 38.
