GRATZ, a strong town of Germany, and capital of Styria, with a castle seated on a rock, and an univer- sity. The Jesuits had a college here; and there are a great number of handsome palaces, and a fine arsenal. The castle stands upon a very lofty hill, and communi- cates with the river by means of a deep well. The empress dowager was obliged to retire hither during the war of 1741 and 1742.
