GRATZ, a strong town of Germany, and capital of Styria, with a castle seated on a rock, and an univer- sity. The Jesuits had a college here; and there are a great number of handsome palaces, and a fine arsenal. The castle stands upon a very lofty hill, and communi- cates with the river by means of a deep well. The empress dowager was obliged to retire hither during the war of 1741 and 1742. It is seated on the river Muer, in E. Long. 15. 16. N. Lat. 47. 10.
