GRIMSBY

Volume 10 · 104 words · 1815 Edition

GREAT, a large sea-port town of Lincolnshire in England, 170 miles north from London; and said to be the second, if not the first, corporation in England. It had anciently three convents and a castle. Here are several streets of good houses, and a church that looks like a cathedral. It was a place of great trade before its harbour was choked up; yet the road before it is a good station for ships that wait for a wind to get out to sea. Its chief trade is in coals and salt brought by the Humber. The population in 1801 was estimated at 1524.
