a sea-port town in the county of Durham. It is commodiously seated on a promontory, and is almost encompassed by the sea. It is an ancient corporation, governed by a mayor and aldermen, with other subordinate officers. It is at present a pretty large, but poor place. It depends chiefly on the fishing trade; and its harbour is much frequented by colliers passing to and from Newcastle. W. Long. 1. 5. N. Lat. 54. 48.
