an island of Italy, in the kingdom of Naples, about 15 miles in circumference, lying on the coast of the Terra di Lavoro, from which it is three miles distant. It is full of agreeable valleys, which produce excellent fruits. It hath also mountains on which grow vines of an excellent kind: likewise fountains, rivulets, and fine gardens.
a town of Italy, and capital of an island of the same name, with a bishop's see and a strong fort. Both the city and fortress stand upon a rock, which is joined to the island by a strong bridge; the rock is about seven furlongs in circumference. The city is like a pyramid of houses piled upon one another, which makes a very singular and striking appearance. At the end of the bridge next the city are iron gates, which open into a subterraneous passage, through which they enter the city. They are always guarded by soldiers who are natives of the island.
