KILMAINHAM

Volume 11 · 88 words · 1815 Edition

a town of Ireland, situated about half a mile from Dublin. It has a session house and handsome gaol; and here the quarter sessions are held for the county of Dublin, and knights of the shire elected for that county. This place was sometimes the seat of government before Dublin castle was converted to that purpose; and though now much decayed, it gives title of baron to the family of Wenman. An ancient priory was founded here, and a house for knights hospitalers of St John of Jerusalem.
