Volume 11 · 102 words · 1815 Edition

a town of Westmoreland, 253 miles from London. It has a woollen manufactory, and a market on Tuesday. It has a free school well endowed with three presentations to Christ's college, Cambridge. It has a large church, and a good stone bridge of three arches over the Lune. From its churchyard and the banks of the river, there is a very fine prospect of the mountains at a vast distance, as well as of the course of the river, which abounds with salmon, trout, &c.; and provisions of all sorts are very cheap here. The number of inhabitants in 1801 was 1283.
