a borough town of Ireland, in the county of Longford and province of Leinster, situated on the river Shannon, 62 miles from Dublin.

This town gave title of viscount to the family of Lanc, and now gives title of earl to that of Butler. There is a bridge over the Shannon at Lanesborough into the county of Roscommon. N. Lat. 53° 40'. W. Long. 8° 6'.
