a county of Ireland, situated in the province of Connaught, is bounded on the north by the bay of Donegal and part of Fermanagh, on the south and west by Sligo and Roscommon, and on the east by Fermanagh and Cavan. It is a fruitful country; and, though mountainous, produces great herds of black cattle; but has few places of note. It contains 206,830 Irish plantation acres, 21 parishes, 5 baronies, and 2 boroughs, and formerly sent five members to parliament; and is about 42 miles long, and 17 broad.

the shire town of the county of that name, is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Shannon, about 80 miles from Dublin; and appears to have been formerly a place of some note. St Mac Lieagus, son of Cernac, was bishop here; and his festival is observed on the 8th of February.
