JOHN, a celebrated philologer, born in 1624. He studied the learned languages and mathematics at Utrecht; and then went to Amsterdam, to converse with the rabbis, and perfect himself in the Hebrew tongue. After which he was professor of Hebrew at Utrecht, where he acquired a great reputation, and died in 1669. He wrote many valuable works; the principal of which are, 1. Onomasticum Sacrum, 8vo. 2. Clavis Hebraica et Philologica Veteris Testamenti, 4to. 3. Novi Testamenti Clavis Graeca, cum Annotationibus Philologicis, 8vo. 4. Compendium Biblium Veteris Testamenti, 8vo. 5. Compendium Graecum Novi Testamenti; the best edition of which is that of London, in 1668, 12mo. 6. Philologus Hebraeus, 4to. 7. Philologus Hebraeo minus, 4to. 8. Philologus Hebraeo-Graecus, 4to. 9. Notes on Jonas, Joel, Hosea, &c. He also gave correct editions of several learned works.
