LIBETHRA

Volume 11 · 62 words · 1815 Edition

in Ancient Geography, the fountain of fong, was situated in Magnesia, a district of Macedonia, annexed to Thessaly; distant from the town of Libethra, which stood on Mount Olympus, where it verges towards Macedonia; hence the muses are called Libethridae, (Virgil). Strabo places on Helicon, not only Hippocrene, and the temple of the Muses, but also the cave of the nymphs Libethrides.
