LIBITINA

Volume 11 · 88 words · 1815 Edition

in the Roman mythology, a goddess which presided over funerals. This goddess was the same with the Venus infera or Epitymbia of the Greeks. She had a temple at Rome, where was lodged a certain piece of money for every person who died, whose name was recorded in a register called Libitina ratio. This practice was established by Servius Tullius, in order to obtain an account of the number of annual deaths in the city of Rome, and consequently the rate of increase or decrease of its inhabitants.
