or LOMBARD, PETER, an engraver of considerable eminence, who flourished about the year 1660. He was a native of Paris, where he learned the art of engraving. It appears that he came to England before the revolution, because some of his plates for English publications are dated prior to that event. He executed a vast variety of plates, as well historical as emblematical; which, however, were chiefly for books. But his best works are portraits; and of these he produced a considerable number, which are esteemed. They are mostly after Vandycck.βHe also engraved historical subjects, from Poufain, Raphael, Annibal Carracci, Guido, and other masters.
