PHILIBERT DE, one of the most celebrated architects in the 16th century, was born at Lyons. Queen Catherine de Medicis gave him the superintendence of buildings; and he had the direction of those of the Louvre, the Tuileries, the castle of St Anet, St Germains, and other edifices erected by her orders. He also wrote several books on architecture. He died about the year 1577.
