LOUYS

Volume 12 · 79 words · 1815 Edition

or Louis, John, an engraver of considerable eminence, who flourished about the middle of the 16th century. According to Bafan he was a native of Flanders. He learned the art of engraving from Peter Soutman, at the time that Snyderhoef studied under the same master; and his usual style of engraving bears some resemblance to that of his master's. One of his best prints is Diana, with her nymphs, rep-fing after the chaste; a middling-sized plate, lengthwise, from Rubens.
