a book or paper written with the hand; by which it stands opposed to a printed book or paper. A manuscript is usually denoted by the two letters MS. and in the plural by MSS. What makes public libraries valuable, is the number of ancient manuscripts repotted in them; see ALEXANDRIAN, CAMBRIDGE, CLERMONT, COTTONIAN, HARLEIAN, VATICAN, &c.
